Inverclyde Athletic Club’s Millie McClelland-Brooks has been named Under-17 Athlete of the Year at the Scottish Athletics Annual Awards after her heroics at the Commonwealth Youth Games earlier this year.
The 16-year-old gained the qualification time for the Scotland team less than a week before the deadline, then finished sixth in the women’s 1,500 metres final at the Games in Trinidad and Tobago.
In doing so, she became the first Inverclyde AC member to compete at a Commonwealth Games Federation event.
She was in the category with Kilbarchan’s Oliver Patton and Edinburgh AC jumper Louis Whyte.
Congratulations go to Millie, her family and her coach, Norrie Hay.
Two more Inverclyde AC personnel were nominated in different categories too.
Long-time serving coach Kay Cooke, an unsung hero at the club, was shortlisted for Community Club
Coach of the Year – won by Gary Beggan of Springburn Harriers.
Kay has been involved in junior development at the club for over 25 years, taking sessions featuring some of the club’s brightest prospects who later became national champions.
Andy Douglas was in the running for Masters Athlete of the Year for his work on the mountain running
scene.
New Over-65 world record holder Paul Forbes claimed the prize.
