Inverclyde AC athletes dominated the Dunoon Ultra Marathon & Relay, held on Saturday 22 August. winning both the individual and team titles.

In the Individual event, 53 km / 33 miles with around 1100m / 3600ft of elevation, John Bell led from the start to finish in a time of 03:45:43, winning by over 35 minutes from the second placed athlete and setting a new course record into the bargain!

John said that it was his intention to have a strong run and go after the course record adding that breaking a course record of a 53 km course on your own is quite an achievement and although the first 40km was fine, he said that he had some difficulty with his stomach taking in nutrition after that resulting on him relying on his energy reserves as best he could to the finish.  However, all through the race he was focussed on one thing, being able to walk over the finish line with his daughter Rhu, which he did!

In the Ultra Relay event, Jason Kane, Thomas Jamieson and Martyn Campbell stormed home in first place in a time of 3:53:12, winning by almost 30 minutes from the second placed team.

Each of them ran:

Leg 1: Jason Kane - 20.16km / 12.53 miles  634m / 2080ft

Leg 2: Thomas Jamieson - 16.13km / 10.02mi, 189m / 620ft

Leg 3: Martyn Campbell - 16.7km / 10.38mi, 288m / 945ft

Jason had the first and toughest leg of the day with all the steepest climbs being in the first leg with an elevation of over 600m over the 20 km leg and brought the team home in 2nd place, within 2 seconds of the leader.

A quick changeover allowed Thomas to get out for the second leg of 16 km before the other team and from them on IAC had the lead.

Thomas stormed away from the second-place athlete and by the time he handed over to Martyn in the third leg (16km) he had established a 13 minute gap, with Martyn continuing to increase the lead on second place to ensure a win for the IAC team by almost 30 minutes.
